The Sansevero Chapel, also known as Pietatella, was built in the 16th century as a votive chapel dedicated to Santa Maria della Pietà. In the 18th century, Prince Raimondo di Sangro of Sansevero remodelled it into a family funerary chapel, decorating it with exquisite sculptures: Giuseppe Sanmartino’s creepily lifelike Cristo Velato (Veiled Christ) is the centrepiece.

Prince Raimondo di Sangro, a student of science, an inventor, and an alchemist, achieved fame as a master of the occult, and the decoration of the chapel has contributed to his reputation.

The Crypt contains two anatomic models, which consist of two mummified bodies, whose cardiovascular systems are perfectly preserved after two centuries. Popular tradition has it that they are the result of Raimondo di Sangro’s experiments.

Subterranean Naples is a labyrinth of aqueducts, passages, and cisterns. It features ancient Greek and Roman artifacts, such as a Greek theatre where the Emperor Nero performed Greek plays, and more modern sites, such as the galleries used as hideouts during World War II.

It’s natural that a world as old, dark and mysterious as Naples Underground should breed a few fantastical urban myths. The best-known is that of the munaciello (little monk), a sprite who hovers around houses playing pranks on the inhabitants, moving objects, and stealing precious jewels. It is described as a thick little man, dressed like a monk in a broad-brimmed hat. This figure was originally associated with the tunnels and cisterns underneath Naples, from which the pozzaro (aqueduct cleaner) could gain access to people’s houses and play tricks when water well owners didn’t pay him for his work.

The building was commissioned by the Bourbon king, Charles III, in 1738 as a lavish hunting lodge to house his mother’s – Elisabetta Farnese – art’s collection.

During the decade of French rule (1806-1815) the building became the official residence of Joseph Bonaparte and Joaquin Murat.

Today, the museum is spread over three floors and 160 rooms. The first floor is dominated by the Galleria Farnese (Farnese Gallery) and the Appartamento Reale (Royal Apartment). Here you will find works by some of the best Italian artists such as Bellini, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Masaccio and Titian, and by artists from the Flemish school, such as Pieter Bruegel and Van Dyck. Besides paintings, the gallery holds sculptures and precious tapestries. A highlight is the Galleria delle Porcellane (Porcelain Gallery), where you can find objects and dinner plates from all the royal palaces of Naples, and the famous Capodimonte ceramics created in the local workshops.

The second floor contains the Galleria Napoletana, which displays works by Neapolitan artists from the 13th century to the 19th century, and some spectacular Belgian tapestries.

The third floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, contemporary art and photography.

The Parco di Capodimonte – the palace’s 130-hectare park- is the largest patch of greenery in the city, wonderful for a stroll.

This imposing palace dominates Piazza del Plebiscito. It was designed by the architect Domenico Fontana and built in two years, from 1600 to 1602, for the Spanish king Filippo III. Ironically, he never made it to Naples, and the castle was used by later kings.

The building, as it is seen by today’s tourists, owes its aspect to a series of transformations, modifications and renovations carried out over the centuries, which have left only the façade and the main courtyard unaltered in their original appearance. At the beginning of the 18th century it was restructured and enlarged under the Bourbon King Charles with the help of Luigi Vanvitelli.

The façade of the Royal Palace is decorated with niches containing giant statues of the city’s great kings. From left to right stand Roger the Norman, Frederick II, Charles I of Anjou, Alfonso I of Aragon, Charles V, Charles III of Bourbon, Joaquin Murat, and Vittorio Emanuele II.

Of particular interest inside the palace is the Teatrino di Corte (Court Theatre), a large hall on the first floor, built by Ferdinando Fuga in 1768. It was here that the royal families gathered for plays, concerts and performances.

Among the many highlights is the Sala del trono (Throne room) containing portraits of people who really existed, a ceiling studded with gilded figures representing different parts of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, as well as a gilded throne.

The palace is furthermore site of the Biblioteca Nazionale (National Library), which is one of the best in the south, with about two million volumes including the famous papyrus manuscripts from Herculaneum.

Also known as the Maschio Angioino, it is one of Naples’ landmark sites. This strapping castle was built in the second half of the 13th century on the orders of Charles I of Anjou, who ascended to the throne of Sicily and transferred the capital from Palermo to Naples. It was remodelled by King Alfonso of Aragon in the 15th century.

Within Castel Nuovo it is possible to visit the Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel), where a few fragments of Giotto’s original frescoes can still be seen along with some Neapolitan Renaissance sculptures, the Sala dei Baroni (Hall of the Barons), and the Museo Civico (Civic Museum). On the first floor of the museum there are paintings, sculptures and silver crucifixes commissioned by church. More modern paintings are displayed on the second floor. Of particular interest are those depicting historical events of Naples’ past such as the massacre of Altamura, and views of Old Naples.

These are just some things that you can see in one of the icons of the city of Naples.

It is one of the most important religious complex of Naples including a church, a convent, and a museum. Commissioned by Robert of Anjou for his wife Sancia di Maiorca, the church and adjoining convent were built in the early 14th century, in honour of Saint Clare, to house the Poor Clares and minor monks.

The Poor Clares’ convent is situated in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, and it is a place that we suggest visiting while you are in the regional capital of Campania.

Spaccanapoli is a long street divided into seven sections bearing different names: Via Pasquale Scura, Via Maddaloni, Via Benedetto Croce, Via San Biagio dei Librai, Via Vicaria Vecchia, Via Forcella, and Via Giudecca Vecchia.

It is called Spaccanapoli because it literally cuts through the centre of town. This part of Naples is densely packed with churches (such as the Gesù Nuovo Church, and Santa Chiara Cloister), squares, spires and historic buildings.

There is also a variety of commercial activities: at San Biagio dei Librai an amazing collection of stores sells all kinds of ornaments, bric-a-brac, antiques and old jewelry, while Via San Gregorio Armeno is a famous street where skilled artisans still make presepi (Nativity scenes), figurines, and also caricature figures of the famous throughout the year.

There are numerous souvenir and knick-knack shops selling red horns and other oddball paraphernalia of the superstitious Neapolitans.

Posillipo is one of the most evocative and charming areas of Naples, which is a must-see for visitors to the city. Elegant buildings, sumptuous villas, big ribs which fall sheer into the sea enhance the beauty of this magnificent hill. Walking down the hill from Mergellina, you can admire the famous aristocratic buildings and the church of Santa Maria del Faro.

If you travel by sea, you can watch these wonderful sights: from Mergellina to the island of Nisida with two landing places (also reachable by land) at Marechiaro and Gaiola.

Parco Virgiliano is situated at the tip of Cape Posillipo. Here, a series of terraces offer jaw-dropping vistas of the Bay of Naples and Pozzuoli. Restored in 2002, this spot is perfect for those who want to do sport and relish the peace of a sit-down amid the shades of Mediterranean pines. High up on the hill, you can find Via Orazio, Via Stazio and Via Manzoni which are residential areas but have similarly spectacular views.
